Monica Gonyo Joins FC Wisconsin as Goalkeeping Coach

2011 National Championship Winner Returns to Club

FC Wisconsin is excited to announce that Monica Gonyo has joined the club as a goalkeeper coach beginning in the fall season.  Gonyo had a distinguished youth career, winning the 2011 U18 USYS National Championship while being named as the "Golden Glove" best goalkeeper in the event.  After her youth career, Gonyo moved on to Loyola University in Chicago where she set the school's all-time records for career shut-outs, single season goals-against average, and career goals-against average.

After her collegiate career, Gonyo played as an Amateur Player with the NWSL's Chicago Red Stars, behind Canadian National team legend Karina LeBlanc, and was the starting goalkeeper for the 2015 WPSL National Championship winners.  Gonyo is returning to her hometown of Milwaukee and to the club where she converted from a defender to a goalkeeper at U17 under the tutelage of former club coach Hideki Nakada, now an assistant coach at Stanford University.

"We are tremendously excited to be welcoming Monica back to the club as a staff member," said Director of Coaching Christian Lavers.  "As a player she accomplished incredible things as a youth and college athlete, and she finished her playing career training in the best professional women's soccer league in the world.  Her ability to relate to youth female goalkeepers, and to teach them the position both as a shot-stopper and just as importantly as a tactically connected part of the team, will be fantastic."

"I can't wait to start working with the FC Wisconsin goalkeepers and teams," said Gonyo.  "I am excited to be back with the coaches that helped me start my career as a youth player, and to help the next generation of goalkeepers from Wisconsin become stars."

FC Wisconsin has a long history of developing great goalkeepers, and Gonyo blazed a path for others to follow with her career.  In just the past four years, Michela Ongaro moved on to become an All Conference honoree in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State University, Katie McCormick played at the University of Oregon, Lilly Mueller is currently playing at MIT, Elyse Hansen plays at Florida Gulf Coast University, Mollie Rosen is a goalkeeper for Northeastern, Jordyn Bloomer (Wisconsin 2016) was a member of the U19 US Soccer Youth National Team this past season, and Jen Wandt has already committed to Baylor University for the fall of 2017.
