The FC Wisconsin Academy teams have been waiting patiently for their first game of the season. With their games getting canceled due to rain mid-September, they were eager to compete on September 26th.
The U7/8 age group is fortunate to have some of our oldest and most talented ECNL players help out at their practices. U18/19 players Ahnna Faust, Abby Hall, Haley Johnson, and Maggie Starker are a part of our coaches-in-training program. This program helps athletes who aspire to be coaches create, structure, and manage practices. In conjunction with Joana (Youth Academy Director), these four have been helping our youngest athletes learn the most basic concepts of the game, all while building confidence and friendships! During the first weekend of games these athletes were competing, and having fun trying out their newly acquired skills.
The U9 Academy team players took a jump in number of players on the field and field size this year, moving to 7v7. Even with having their spring season cancelled, these athletes were eager, organized, and skillful! Over the last few weeks, they have been working on using the (much larger) space, creating triangular support all over the field, and using skill to get out of small spaces and beat defenders. It was clear in the games on 9/26 and 9/27 that this age has taken very positive steps in these areas of the attack. We look forward to seeing what this small but competitive group does the rest of the fall.
The oldest U10 Academy team have a fantastic bond and competitive drive that all of our younger academy players look up to. They catch on quickly and organize their attack with urgency and intent, and they understand the importance of using space by creating depth and width. During their first weekend of games, they used the wide space and shared the ball well, creating lots of opportunities on goal and putting several in the back of the net.
The Fall Youth Academy Season has been a great experience so far, and we look forward to more fun, skill, and competition!
